ZZ Top Redux

[EDIT: KBTV reports that the ZZ Top show this weekend has been cancelled - but will be rescheduled. http://setxhomepage.com/content/fulltext/?cid=7535

[Original post]: Of course ZZ Top is back for its annual visit to Ford Park. No, wait, that's not right. Not "annual." It only seems like the legendary Texas-blues-rock trio has been here every year since Ford Park opened - probably because ZZ Top's shows have been Ford Pavilion's biggest draws EVER [and so much damn time passes between shows in the outdoor venue].

For this year's SETX stop, ZZ Top headlines the "Rompin' Stompin' Texas Jam" with special guest Montgomery Gentry, Saturday May 3 at the otherwise under-used Ford Pavilion, 5115 I-10 South in Beaumont, Texas.

The official press release for the event says that "the 2008 Ford Pavilion season will officially begin" with the event, but I haven't heard of any other shows in the pavilion's "season." We'll see.

I'm just wondering what's going to piss people off this time around. At the first ZZ Top Ford Park bash, some fans were outraged that Hank Williams Jr. [gasp!] CURSED onstage - and at the second show, a LOT of fans saw red when Kid Rock did ONE song. Yeah, that sucked.

They say the third times's a charm, but you know how it goes - most times "they" don't know shit.

"The Rompin' Stompin' Texas Jam," presented by Coondog Productions & SK Productions, features a "pre-show tailgate party" at 3 p.m. in the Ford Park Midway with a car show, bike rally and live local music. Gates to the Pavilion will open at 6 p.m. Tickets are $78.50, $64.50, $48.50 and $34.50 [for lawn seating], to which I say "Holy crap!"

Info Dump: According to local legend, ZZ Top played its first paid gig in 1970 at a Beaumont show, thanks to local DJ Al Caldwell. So the otherwise Houston-based band has been considered a "local" act by longtime fans. The band's biggest songs include "Tush," "Pearl Necklace," "Cheap Sunglasses," "LaGrange," "Under Pressure" "Gimme All Your Lovin,'" "Sharp Dressed Man," "Legs," "TV Dinner" and "She's Just Killin' Me."
