Asian Action On Netflix

By Brent Snyder If you enjoyed The Raid 2, there are several other excellent Asian action flicks to check out on Netflix: Night In Paradise (2020) - Park Hoon-jung (I Saw The Devil) stages a tourist island getaway as the setting for a blood-splattered crime drama. Two strangers meet on an island and find they share some commonalities - both have had their families killed by mob hits, both share a love for fish soup - and both are very good at killing gangsters. Four stars. Jung_E (2023) - The director of TRAIN TO BUSAN trades fast zombies for even faster battling robots in this sci-fi action melodrama. Three stars. The Witch Part 1: The Subversion (2018) - What starts as a mystery wrapped in a sci-fi thriller shifts into overdrive as a blood-spattered action flick. The Soska Sisters' RABID - Cronenberg Couture

RABID (2019) - An imaginative re-imagining of David Cronenberg's cult classic, "Rabid" is transhumanism terror at it's finest. The Soska Sisters ("American Mary") blend bloody body horror with hallucinatory nightmare images and eye-popping violent visions. With a striking color palette dominated by deep reds and inky blacks, the world of high fashion has never looked so fine - and been so frightening. Four stars.

It's A Curse, I Tell Ya, A Curse!

I'm not surprised that half of the "Crockett Street Entertainment Complex" shut down overnight. It's the location. Everyone knows that the building across the street has a Voodoo curse on it. Just sayin .' Crockett Street owners aren't saying why Antone's, Texas Star Bar, the Dixie Dancehall , the Black Cat Lounge, and the Ten Lounge shut their doors, but they are claiming that the joints will reopen in 60 days. What's that about? Staying open for now are the bars Hog Wild and Bobby McGee's, the restaurant Rio Rita's and the Neches Room, which I've never been in but people rent it for various invitation-only shindigs. Oh, and the Spindletop restaurant might also stay open. Or not.

Kevin Williamson's "Sick" Slasher For The Pandemic Generation

SICK (2022) - W hile I miss the witty banter found in other Kevin Williamson scripts, his screenplay for "Sick" has a great concept and is presented as a masterclass in suspense. Director John Hyams (Universal Soldier: Regeneration) is no Wes Craven, but director of photography Yaron Levy has a great genre resume (Blood Drive, Black Summer, the Purge and Scream series). His cinematography is gorgeous and the film's bloody third act is worth the wait. Three stars.

Terror Tuesday: Horror Films For Halloween Viewing

Sure, Halloween is on a Tuesday this year, but nothing says you can't enjoy some scary movies on a week night. Here are a few flicks found on various streaming services to close out spooky season: ALL HALLOWS EVE: I'm torn on Damien Leone's feature length debut "All Hallows Eve" - which showcases his short films and introduces the world to horror icon Art the Clown. On one hand, I don't care for the first two shorts in this Halloween horror anthology. But I absolutely love the third short with Art the Clown, as well as the wraparound chapters centering on a babysitter watching a mysterious videotape. And the ending is truly spooky AF. UNFRIENDED DARK WEB: I was totally surprised at how much this superior sequel exceeded my expectations. Trading the previous entry's supernatural ghost-in-the-machine approach, this chapter deep dives into illegal surveillance, Identity theft, deep fakes, human trafficking, torture and murder.
