The Sadness: Depravity Is The Point

By Brent Snyder (May 12, 2022)

"The Sadness" is a 2021 ultra-violent Taiwanese pandemic horror gore-fest written/directed by Canadian filmmaker Rob Jabbaz. Inspired by Garth Ennis' "Crossed" comic book series, it depicts the spread of a rabies-like virus that quickly turns people into mobs of crazed homicidal rapists.

The pandemic horror film brutally pushes the envelope of onscreen violence to the breaking point with non-stop sadistic carnage. It's relentless, repulsive and repugnant by design. Depravity is the point and the addition of vile sexual violence makes many scenes that much harder to watch.

"The Sadness" is both horrifying and horrible - which is the goal of Jabbaz's directorial debut. He didn't set out to make a fun, comfortable horror flick. He sought to get under the audience's skin, make it crawl, and then rip it to shreds. He succeeded.
