X (2022) - Sex, violence and celluloid collide in Ti West's gloriously grimy ode to '70s exploitation flicks. Passion and murderous impulses are ignited as an indie film crew shoots a porno at a desolate Texas farmhouse. Dark humor, clever editing and gnarly kills make A24's X an effectively entertaining slasher. And it's stellar cast, including Mia Goth (in a dual role), Jenna Ortega and Brittany Snow, gives the film that special something extra. Four Stars.
Saloum (2021) - Jean Luc Herbulot's Senegalese sensation pits a trio of gun-slinging mercenaries against vengeful spirits in a mysterious village. One part spaghetti western, one part samurai drama and one part folk horror thriller, Saloum rocks. Four Stars.
Host (2020) - A group of friends conduct a seance via Zoom session - and all Hell literally breaks loose. Set during a Covid-19 lock-down, supernatural shenanigans spill across a computer screen in real time. Effectively frightful and bloody brilliant. Four Stars.
Smiley Face Killers (2020) - Slow burn serial killer thriller written by Bret Easton Ellis (American Psycho) and directed by Tim Hunter (River's Edge). Brilliant casting of Crispin Glover as "Hooded Figure" and cool electronic score by Kristin Kontrol. Three Stars.
A Ghost Waits (2020) - A low-budget romantic horror comedy that is funny, sweet and spooky fun. The delightful haunted house rom-com from writer/director Adam Stovall features a star-making performance by co-writer MacLeod Andrews. Four Stars.
Dead And Beautiful (2021) - Beautifully shot and stylish slow burn drama about billionaire trust fund kids who transition from metaphorical vampires into literal blood suckers. And then ask the question "What's the difference?" Three Stars.
